Five Ways To Care For Your Hair Extensions
Now that you have bought your Stephnel Luxury Hair extensions we wanted to help you make the most of them. So we have put together a great guide showing you the best way to look after your extensions. This guide applies to tapes and clip ins alike, so have a read and take the best care of your Stephnel.
1) Wash your Hair with Sulphate Free Shampoo & a Nourishing Conditioner
The Quality of your Hair Products plays a big role in how long your extensions last and feel! Sulphates can strip the oils and moisture from the hair, this can then contribute to tangling, knots and breakage. Sulphate can also weaken adhesive on Tape-in Extensions causing them to loosen.
Here is one of our favourite shampoos.
For most it goes without saying but, always Condition after Shampooing this adds moisture back into the hair and restores hydration which will make the hair feel softer and easier to manage - especially the ends which tend to get dry. Avoid applying conditioner on roots if you are wearing Tape-ins - the conditioner can damage the adhesive on the tapes.
Try this Olaplex Conditioner which pairs perfectly Olaplex No4 Shampoo.
Remember to not over or under wash your Hair!
2) Brush your Hair Regularly
Brushing your hair extensions regularly from ends to root helps to prevent tangles, maintain smoothness, and prolong their lifespan. Tangles can cause breakage and damage to both the extensions and your natural hair. By brushing gently and regularly you prevent the hair from matting, and keep the extensions looking their best. It's important to use the right brush for your extensions. We advise a tangle teezer or a mixed bristled brush (plastic & bristle). For curly hair we would advise a comb as this will not effect the curls.
This comb is one of our favourites!
3) Use Heat Protection
Using a heat protector with human hair extensions is important because it helps to minimize damage from heat styling tools such as flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers. Just like natural hair, human hair extensions can become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage when exposed to high temperatures. Heat protectants create a barrier between the hair and the heat, reducing the risk of damage, preserving the hair's moisture, and keeping it looking healthy and shiny.
We love the L'Oréal Professionel Serie Expert Fluidifier. Why not give it a go.
4) Use a Hair Serum or Light Oil
Using a serum or Light oil on human hair extensions provides several benefits:
  • Moisture- Serums and oils help to moisturize the hair, keeping it hydrated and preventing dryness and brittleness.
  • Smooth- They help to smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and flyaways, making the extensions look sleek and shiny.
  • Detangle- They can make combing and brushing easier by reducing tangles and knots, especially after washing or when hair is damp.
As always, avoid applying oils on the root area if you have Tape-ins as it will loosen the adhesive on the tapes.
We love the Olaplex Bonding Oil which will really add a shine to your hair. You can find it here.
5) Sleep with a Bonnet or Satin Pillowcase
Benefits:
  • Reduced Friction- Satin is smooth and slippery, unlike cotton or other fabrics, which can cause friction and tangling. Sleeping on a satin pillowcase or wearing a satin bonnet helps to minimize friction between the hair extensions and the surface, reducing the risk of tangles and damage.
  • Preservation of style- Satin helps to maintain the style of your extensions, whether they're straight, curly, or wavy, by preventing them from rubbing against rough surfaces during sleep.
  • Moisture retention- Satin does not absorb moisture as much as cotton does, so it helps to retain the natural oils and moisture in the hair extensions, keeping them hydrated and reducing dryness and frizz.
  • Protection- Wearing a bonnet or sleeping on a satin pillowcase provides a protective barrier between the extensions and the pillow, preventing them from getting caught or tangled in the fabric.
